The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) is holding their annual fundraiser, Paws in the Park, at Payson Park on Sunday, October 7, 2012, from 9am until 2pm.

Pet pharmaceutical company Putney, Inc. has organized a group of local veterinarians to provide free wellness checkups for dogs participating in the ARLGP’s Paws in the Park fundraiser. As one of the many vendor booths at the event, the free wellness checkup booth will emphasize the importance of regular veterinary visits to help pets live longer and healthier lives.

Local veterinarians, including our very own Dr. Nellie Savage and Dr. Alden Chadbourne, will be donating their time to provide the free exams. According to Dr. Savage, the event provides participating dog owners an opportunity to connect with a veterinarian, especially important if they have been delaying annual checkups during the recent economic downturn. “Regular wellness exams allow us to evaluate a pet’s general health and become aware of any health problems before they become serious illnesses,” says Dr. Savage.

Now in its fifteenth year, this is the first time that free pet wellness checkups will be part of the Paws in the Park event. “We’re very excited that Putney approached us about organizing local veterinarians to provide free checkups for the dogs. One of our missions is to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals. Getting proper medical attention is a crucial part of responsible pet ownership,” says Lynne McGhee, Community Relations Manager of the ARLGP.

The Paws in the Park fundraiser also includes Cool Canine contests with celebrity judges, police dog and agility training demos, raffles, vendors, food, and music by the Kosmik Zombies.
